Belief in Afterlife Makes You Fat?
I read an interesting article today:
Religion and Obesity; Report Associates Religious Activity With Weight Gain
Reminder: Correlation is not the same as causation.
It is interesting to speculate and hypothesize on why a correlation may exist. It is a great way to practice those Occam’s razor skills.
The article tries to pin the blame on the food practices of various religions; Wednesday night dinners, big meals after church on Sunday, etc. I think it is worth considering whether the beliefs themselves could lead to obesity.
My theory: A combination of pre-determinism and a strong belief in an eternal afterlife reduce the perceived importance of actions that may lead to obesity. I mean, if you are excited to go to heaven, why would you work to prolong your life here?
